The expectations from Christian Dior designer Raf Simons were high after seeing his couture collection displayed this summer, but this season’s show couldn’t impress many. For the first time, he came up with ready-to-wear women wear and it looked more for celebs than normal publics.
Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, and Natalie Portman were expected in his show, but only Robert DeNiro, Leelee Sobieski, and Jennifer Lawrence were seated in the front row of Dior’s 2013 spring.
Everything about his ready-to-wear collection was awaited, especially following his summer couture and his latest show for Jil Sander. His creations represented simplicity and what made it very impressive at Jil Sander show is they came with a surprise package of incredible shapes, big full skirts, long peplum skirts, and multi colors.
Belgian Simons used much of flower works in his collections, with orange and pink colors combined with white T-shirts, representing purity. This season’s show wasn’t captivating, especially the shocking Julianne Moore’s yellow Emmy dress. However, rest looked wearable, ladylike, grown up, and flattering in a way only Parisians can be.
Dior will teach the design and style of the fashion and collection world and there’re through lines in terms of prints, trends, themes, fabrics, and moods. Almost every creation reflects the feeling and mood of the others, starting from trousers and evening gowns.
His black suits, inspired from YSL’s Le Smokings may put him against Hedi Slimane designer’s creation. The low black dresses always look great and are highly desired too, but LBD were so short that even taller Leele Sobieski and Jenny Lawrence wouldn’t be able to wear it. This short trend cannot be afforded by 18-year old teenagers. His ready-to-wear dresses look shorter with tiny black shorts covering them. Obviously, it will look good on models, running the catwalk, but real women going in such attire is not recommended.
Few dresses were very close to knee length and few were longer than expected covered in overlays, net, sequins, and side ruffles. He didn’t bother to show only one particular color, but all shades he tweed, including orange, rust, grey, and pink. Few costumes featured stripe trend, but Raf picked neither black or pink satin. Simons show received mixed reviews, majority saying it wasn’t that good as his January couture, which will be the highlight of Oscar and Globes looks.
